Enterprise Broadband Router and Load Balance Router

1) Enterprise Broadband Router - provides all the normal settings of a broadband router, it features much more advanced functions, such as Bandwidth Control , Port Mirror , Port VLAN , UPnP , VPN Pass-through, Firewall and System Log.

2) Load Balance Router - provides all the normal settings of an Enterprise Broadband Router and with the additional ability to connect up to a few WAN Internet connections, the total available bandwidth multiples in capacity and therefore provides a tremendous increase in network efficiency and user productivity. Multiple WAN ports also provide a fast-acting failover response mechanism; if one Internet connection goes down, the other automatically takes control to ensure continuous network uptime.

Terms

a) Bandwidth Control - a process of measuring and controlling the traffic (amount of data) on a network link, to avoid filling the link to capacity or overfilling the link, which would result in network congestion and poor performance.

b) Port Mirror - is used on a network switch to send a copy of all network data seen on one switch port to a network monitoring connection on another switch port. This is commonly used for network appliances that require monitoring of network traffic.

c) Port VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) – is a method of creating independent logical networks within a physical network. Several VLANs can co-exist within such a network. This helps in reducing the broadcast domain and aids in network administration by separating logical segments of a LAN (like company departments) that should not exchange data using a LAN (they still can exchange data by routing).

d) DDNS (Dynamic Domain Name System) - is a system that allows the domain name data held in a name server to be updated in real-time. The most common use for this is in allowing an Internet domain name to be assigned to a computer with a varying (dynamic) IP address . This makes it possible for other sites on the Internet to establish connections to the machine without needing to track the IP address themselves.

e) UPnP ( Universal Plug and Play) - is a set of computer network protocols that allow devices to connect seamlessly and to simplify the implementation of networks in the home (data sharing, communications, and entertainment) and corporate environments.

f) VPN (Virtual Private Network) pass-through - is a communications network tunneled through another network, and dedicated for a specific network. One common application is secure communications through the public Internet, but a VPN need not have explicit security features, such as authentication or content encryption. VPNs, for example, can be used to separate the traffic of different user communities over an underlying network with strong security features.

g) WAN ( Wide Area Network ) - is a computer network that covers a broad area (i.e., any network whose communications links cross metropolitan, regional, or national boundaries). Or, less formally, a network that uses routers and public communications links .

Managed Switch

Managed Switch allows you to control the individual ports of your switch. The most basic unit will have the ability to turn the port on or off and control its link speed and duplex settings . That control is for security; it prevents someone just walking in and connecting to your LAN through an unused port. Beyond that, you may be able to designate certain ports as "high priority"; for example the ports your servers are on. Setting bandwidth limits, monitoring port traffic and logging are also features.

1) Managed Pure-Gigabit Switch – Managed Switch that contains pure-Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps ) ports only. Pure- Gigabit ports support speed increased from 10 to 1000 megabits per second (Mbps).

2) Managed Gigabit- Uplink Switch – Managed Switch that contains pure-Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports and Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) ports. Pure- Gigabit ports support speed increased from 10 to 1000 megabits per second (Mbps). Ethernet ports support speed increased from 10 to 100 Mbps.

Terms

a) SFP (Small form-factor pluggable) – is a compact optical transceiver used in optical communications for both telecommunications and data communications applications. It interfaces a network device motherboard (for a switch, router or similar device) to a fiber optic or unshielded twisted pair networking cable. Optical SFP modules are commonly available in four different categories: 850 nm (SX), 1310 nm (LX), 1550 nm (ZX), and WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing).

b) MiniGBIC (Mini Gigabit Interface Converter) modules - GBIC is a standard for transceivers, commonly used with Gigabit Ethernet and fibre channel. One gigabit ethernet port can support a wide range of physical media, from copper to long-wave single-mode optical fiber, at lengths of hundreds of kilometers.

c)10/100 Mbps RJ45 port – Ethernet port that supports speed increased from 10 to 100 Mbps.

d) 10/100/1000 Mbps RJ45 port – Gigabit port that supports speed increased from 10 to 1000 Mbps.

e) MAC (Media Access Control) address - a quasi-unique identifier attached to most network adapters ( NICs ). It is a number that acts like a name for a particular network adapter, so, for example, the network cards (or built-in network adapters) in two different computers will have different names, or MAC addresses, as would an Ethernet adapter and a wireless adapter in the same computer, and as would multiple network cards in a router.

f)  SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) - is an application layer protocol that facilitates the exchange of management information between network devices. It is part of the Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol ( TCP / IP ) protocol suite. SNMP enables network administrators to manage network performance, find and solve network problems, and plan for network growth.

g) IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) Snooping - is a feature that allows the switch to "listen in" on the IGMP conversation between hosts and routers. When a switch hears an IGMP report from a host for a given multicast group, the switch adds the host's port number to the multicast list for that group. And, when the switch hears an IGMP Leave, it removes the host's port from the table entry.

Unmanaged Switch

Unmanaged Switch have no configuration interface or options. They are typically found in SOHO or home environments. Unmanaged switch is capable of inspecting data packets as they are received, determining the source and destination device of that packet, and forwarding it appropriately.

1) Unmanaged Pure-Gigabit Switch - Unmanaged Switch that contains pure-Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports only. Pure-Gigabit ports support speed increased from 10 to 1000 megabits per second (Mbps).

2) Unmanaged Gigabit-Uplink Switch - Unmanaged Switch that contains pure-Gigabit (10/100/1000 Mbps) ports and Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) ports. Pure-Gigabit ports support speed increased from 10 to 1000 megabits per second (Mbps). Ethernet ports support speed increased from 10 to 100 Mbps.

3) Unmanaged 10/100M Switch – Unmanaged Switch that contains Ethernet (10/100 Mbps) ports only. Ethernet ports support speed increased from 10 to 100 Mbps.

 

Fiber Converter

Fiber converter is designed to convert 10/100M or 10/100/1000M RJ45 based media to SC fiber media.

1) Gigabit WDM Fiber Converter – Fiber converter that converts 10/100/1000M RJ45 to 1000M fiber SC (Standard Converter/ Subscriber Connector)

2) 100M WDM Fiber Converter – Fiber converter that converts 10/100M RJ45 to 100M fiber SC (Standard Converter/ Subscriber Converter)
